When naughty sequins happen to good people

So I've been trying out some new photography ideas, trying to make my product images a bit more interesting. I tried some adorable teeny tiny star sequins for my earrings however this happened...

As pretty as it looked I really didn't want to pick them all up off the floor!

This was the end result:

Not perfect yet but I'm getting there! Anyway I've found a new app called Lumyer where you can add awesome effects to your images, check this out!

I love it! I'm going to play around with this for hours!!

21 Bracelets for 21 Bridesmaids

This week I had one of the biggest orders I've ever had from a beautiful Bride to Be!

She wanted 21 Heart Charm Bracelets for her 21 Bridesmaids, all in personalised gift boxes.

Making up an order of this size takes about 2-3 hours, and I find the most efficient way to pull it all together is to set up a production line, of course I have my trusty Lapdog Tray to help me out!

Preparations
First things first, getting the bracelets ready. All of my jewellery pieces are made by hand, as I build them to the customers specifications, so each bracelet needs building separately.

I lay out the pieces I need to build them and start putting them together; I tend to start with the clasps and the extension chains and drop to finish.

Then I lay out the chain and attach the pieces together to make the bracelets. This customer wanted them all standard sizing but I can make them in any length.

Personalising
Next, the charms. The customer tells me the initials that each bracelet needs to have, and I lay them all out with the shaped charms and start attaching them to the bracelets.

I then make the beads into charms. I use a simple rolled loop to secure the beads and add them to the bracelets.

Et Voila! 21 personalised bracelets all ready for packing!

Gift Boxes
The Bride-to-Be also asked for a Personalised Gift Box for each bracelet, so I got printing!

Packing
Then it's time to wrap them all up and get them to the post office. As this was a special order they got my special pink bags!

If you have a special order (or just want one!) then all of my jewellery is available on my Website, and selected lines are available in my Etsy Store.

Etsy Sales Map

Just for fun, I used the Etsy Sales Map app to see where my orders have been sent all over the world.

I was quite surprised by my results, I was surprised to see how many orders I'd sent to the UK, and that I had shipped orders to every state in the US!

In total, I've hit 17 countries! I'm pretty impressed with that! I wonder where my next country will be?

  1. United Kingdom (1027)
  2. United States (841)
  3. Australia (51)
  4. Canada (49)

Me and My Lapdog Tray!

My gorgeous fiancé bought me an amazing gift for my birthday last month; a new Lapdog!

Not a cute and lovable new pet; but a versatile crafting tray that sits comfortably in my lap. It’s no substitute for an actual dog, but it is an amazing product, and I don’t know how I ever lived without it!

The tag line is “The Craft Anywhere Tray”, which would be true as long as you weren’t leaving the country, the tray would definitely need its own suitcase!

When it arrived, it was a lot bigger than I expected it to be. At first I thought it was going to be too bulky, but when I filled it with my bits and pieces and actually started to use it, I realised that it needs to be the size that it is in order for it to function as a crafting tool.

The soft cushion is really comfortable, I can sit in front of the TV and watch my favourite shows whilst I make up orders. The plush velvet fabric on the bottom also means it doesn’t slide around, which is perfect for keeping my pesky beads in place!

The best thing about the tray is the storage compartments; and it’s really a credit to the designers as each compartment is useful and it all fits together so perfectly!

I’ve organised my supplies so I can make up my most popular pieces quickly, I keep my best selling charms on the left, namely my Big Sister Necklaces, and Bridesmaid and Flower Girl Jewellery.

On the display tray in the center, I keep the findings that I use for almost every piece of jewellery, and my glass pearl beads, so I can quickly access all of bits and bobs.

I keep my tools in the handy section on the right, I am forever putting them down and losing them so this is perfect for me!

The back section is ideal for storing my card inserts for my Birthstone Jewellery, I also keep my phone in this section, so I can read my messages and work through my Etsy orders.

I actually use one of the storage boxes for unusable materials and junk, I use the other one to store my finished pieces that are ready for packing.

If you want to order your own Lapdog Craft Tray, then visit their website here: http://www.lapdogtray.co.uk

How I've Grown My Etsy Business

Happy New Year everyone! Here's to 2015 - I can tell it's going to be a big one!

2014 has been so amazing for me and my business, it's become so much more than I had imagined and originally planned three years ago. I had to make a decision, did I want FunkyPinks to be a hobby I dabbled in every now and then; or did I want this to grow into a successful commercial business I could make a real profit from?

If you look back on my blog you'll see that this time last year I re-branded my business and changed my product offering, which was a bit daunting for me at the time, but I felt it was a risk worth taking.

My New Branding

At the beginning of the year I set myself a business goal - I wanted to achieve a total of 365 orders on Etsy averaging out one order a day. This felt like a realistic goal at the time, as in 2013 I racked up 112 orders.

What actually happened stunned me!

I took a massive 1,308 orders for the whole of 2014! Whilst some small businesses may scoff at this number, I'm incredibly proud of it; Especially as this is a part time business I run when I'm not doing my day job.

There's been many a night when I've worked 9-5 to then sit down and work through the days orders to get them shipped out on time! Some days demand became so high I had to close my shop to new orders so I didn't get too far behind!

Even though I have well over 1000 orders, this doesn't actually reflect the amount of individual jewellery pieces I've made, as well as individual pieces I also sell a lot of sets, so one order could amount to 6 pieces, for example.

I've actually made over 1,500 individual necklaces and 800 bracelets over the course of the year, each one made to order and to individual specifications!

Set of Three Sister Necklaces are my most popular set!

I've read a lot of 'how to sell more on Etsy' blogs, which all have great advice and guidance to improve sales numbers, and I've implemented many of these ideas into my business which has definitely contributed to my success.

I wanted to share some of my own thoughts and experiences of selling on Etsy, what I've explored, and the results I've had. These things are not going to apply to every business on Etsy, but may give someone food for thought to help them!

Making my Business more Commercial - As I work a full time job as well as my business, I don't have the time to sit and create one off pieces and be able to market them successfully enough to make a reliable profit. I shifted my designs from one off pieces to personalised charm jewellery, and this has provided me with a steady stream of orders for the same design, but in a different colour or style. It's means I can manage my time more productively.

I used to class myself as a 'craft business' and whilst I do make each piece by hand I wouldn't call myself a 'crafter'. I'm a business woman (entrepreneur if you will), my priority is making my invested time worth it financially.

I keep my creative thirst at bay by designing new pieces and my website, I love building my brand through my packaging and graphics.

Improving Product Photographs - I've vastly improved the images I use to market my products, this was the trickiest part for me, it has taken me a few years to get them right, and I still struggle to take that perfect picture! Few things put me off buying something online more than a poor quality photograph! I also wanted my photographs to have a 'style', something that would be instantly recognisable to customers who know my branding.

Improving the Quality of my Etsy Listings - Again, there is a lot of information online about improving your item listings to get them higher up on search pages. The most reliable source is always Etsy itself: https://www.etsy.com/uk/help/article/247

Etsy changed their search algorithm in the last year, and sellers were complaining in the forums that they were not getting as many views in their shop, probably because they hadn't changed anything on their listings. It's good to keep in touch with the changes, what they mean, and how to change your listings to enable your listings to rank higher in searches.

My top tip is to monitor your stats page, work out what phrases people are using to find your listings on Etsy, and use these specific phrases in your titles, tags and descriptions for maximum impact.

I invested in the blugrin application called Betsi.

It allows you to bulk edit your Etsy listings in a single click, which is essential for effectively managing a high number of individual listings in your shop. They have a free 'Lite' version but I would recommend paying the monthly subscription to be able to edit tags and variations.

Exploring New Markets - Bridesmaid and Flower Girl gifts were my best selling products in the Summer, I only really had two designs that I marketed, and I sold out three times in three months. This year, I'm going to launch several new designs aimed at this market in order to increase my slice of this very lucrative pie!

I am by no means an Etsy expert but it really works for me, and enables me to run a thriving business alongside my day job. The dream is to make this business my full time job, I'm still working on it!

Who was St Patrick anyway?

Every year I love making St. Patrick's Day themed jewellery, but I don't know what it is exactly that I love about it.

Maybe it's the brash green & gold colours, the genetically modified clovers, or maybe it's the excessive merriment that's now become associated with this Irish patron Saint.

Many people that celebrate St. Patrick's Day don't even know why he's so famous throughout the world. I wanted to find out for myself, so I did a bit of research.

I'm by no means an expert historian, and to be honest, who can really know for sure? Here is my fun version (you'll notice the facts are less than informative):
He was born in Britain, like ages ago.
  • He was taken to Ireland as a prisoner - sad times
  • He escaped - better times
  • Heard the voice of God telling him to leave Ireland and become a Priest
  • Left Ireland
  • Became a Priest
  • Went back to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity
  • Did some stuff with bonfires
  • Scared some snakes away
  • Added a sun symbol to what is now known as the celtic cross
  • Invented Guinness (alright I made that bit up)
  • Apparently died on March 17th 460 A.D (ish)

That's my version anyway, if you want some better informed information I suggest you google it for yourself! This is a good place to start:

Now you've had your history lesson for today, check out my very green & gold, four leaf clover specials!

Is there anyone out there?

Hello! Hello! Hello...? Echo, echo, echo...
Is there anyone out there?

They say that blogging is the 21st century version of keeping a diary, but I'm wondering, will anyone even read it?
Only one way to find out... let's give it a go...

I've been making jewellery casually for the last 2 years with mixed results. It all started with a pair of button earrings I spotted in a shop and I thought to myself "I could make those myself!" So I did!

Since then I started a Facebook page and then and Etsy shop, trying different styles with different medium, all mixed together with one constant - bold and bright colours!

Last Christmas (2013) I sold more jewellery than I ever had before, and it was quite a surprise at the time! I had multiple orders for the same items, where previously I had made one-off pieces that took a long time to sell.

I wanted to make my little sister a necklace for Christmas, and when browsing my wholesaler I came across some awesome charms that I knew would suit us both! Thus the 'Sisters' Jewellery range was born!

The present for my little sis!

These sister necklaces have been a huge hit! I also have 'Big' sister and 'Middle' sister, and my set of 3 necklace sets have definitely been the most popular product so far this year. It's been amazing to see that other people like my funky sister designs as much as I did when I was browsing for a gift for my own sister!

This made me think about changing my product offering. I wanted to design jewellery that was simple, funky and colourful, but I also wanted to incorporate an element of personalisation.

From there I designed a few more charm necklaces, just to get me started. It was quite scary changing everything I had done before, it felt like a big risk. I'm still only a few months into my new range, and things seem to be going well, but there's always room for improvement!

I need more hours in the day!

Whilst I'm feeling tired I wanted to see if any other crafters out there are feeling the same as me.....

I love making jewellery and selling it online, but I wish I had more time to dedicate to it!

I work full time office hours in London and commute everyday from Birmingham (Long, boring story as to why, I'll save it for another day!) So I don't get home 'til after 7 o'clock in the evening, after eating tea I'll only have a few hours to squeeze in some crafting before I have to go to bed to get up and do it all over again the next day! I do love my job and am hoping to move closer to home fairly soon, but I find it frustrating that I can't spend as much time on my hobby as I want to!

I'd love to get some beading done on the train, but anyone on the Birmingham-Euston train will know that there's not a lot of elbow room!

I also want to spend time with my my gorgeous, loving and supportive boyfriend who is quickly running out of patience as he keeps stepping on beads and findings. My jewellery is a hobby more than a source of income and I couldn't afford to give up my job to make jewellery full time, thought it's nice to have a back up plan!

I spend a lot of time at the weekend creating new things but not as much as I'd like to; I'd love to churn out new things everyday to keep my Etsy shop fresh and my Facebook Page buzzing but it's just not possible with my current work-life balance!

Does anyone else feel the same and how do you deal with it?? Your wisdom is welcome....

Your tired FunkyPinks friend
